This guide introduces some of the key benefits of using the Windows 10 taskbar. Including tips on how to pin applications to the taskbar

The Windows taskbar is generally located at the bottom of the screen and comprises four distinct sections.

  1. The start menu
  2. The search bar includes Internet search via Microsoft Bing search engine
  3. Shortcut to pinned and/or open tasks
  4. Systems notifications

The rest of this guide will only cover the use of the Windows taskbar to manage pinned and opened tasks. I plan to write separate guides on the Windows start menu, Windows search bar and notification guides over the next few weeks.

Pinned and open tasks in the Windows taskbar

The section of the Windows taskbar which gives it is a name. The Windows taskbar displays the following applications.

  • An application which is currently running
  • An application which has been pinned to the Windows taskbar.

When an application is open, hovering the mouse over the application in the taskbar will display a small window that shows what the application Window is displaying.

Pinned applications benefit from acting as a shortcut, making it easy to open applications that the user regularly uses. The functionality I regularly use as I find it useful.

Now that we have an idea of the benefits of using the taskbar, why don’t we run through the various processes of pinning applications to the taskbar in Windows 10?

The following steps will pin an application currently open to the Windows 10 taskbar.

  1. Open the application
  2. Right-click on the application in the taskbar
  3. Select pin to taskbar from menu

  1. Right-click on the application icon on the desktop
  2. Select pin application to taskbar from menu

  1. Right-click on the application in the start menu
  2. Move the mouse to the more option in the menu
  3. An extended menu appears select pin application to the taskbar.
