What Is A DAC?

A DAC (Digital Analog Converter) converts information from a digital form into an analogue form.

So Why Do We Need A DAC?

In my mind the answer to what is a DAC? Raises the following question, why do we need a DAC? A question I will look to answer in this section.

We live our lives in an Analogue Universe. Our senses evolved to process the information we receive from the universe around us in its analogue form. Analouge information is continuous and infinite.

Much of the technology around us, like your phone, television, or computer uses information in a digital form. Digital information is a discreate numeric value within a finite range.

Our senses are unable to process digital information. This problem is resolved by translating information from its digital form to an analogue form we can process. This device is called a DAC.

DAC Examples

Now that we know what a DAC it probably won’t come as much of a surprise to read that you are surrounded by them. You might have even have realized that you are using a DAC to read the article.

As well as visual information such as the contents of this web page. Listen to music on your mobile phone and a DAC is producing sound from the digital information held for the music you are listening to.
