Watching TV on Windows

This article will look at the various ways to watch TV on any computer or device running Windows 10 or Windows 11.

How to watch broadcast live TV on Windows

To watch broadcast over the air TV, you need a device to convert the signal received by your TV aerial into a form that your computer can access. I use the HD Homerun, which connects to your home network. You can read my review of the HDHomerun for more information.

Devices such as the HD Homerun will often come with their own software, but you can also use third-party media server applications such as Plex or Emby. To record over the air programming like you could on a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) will likely require a subscription. You can find out more about using Plex as a PVR in our setting up Plex as a PVR guide.

TV Streaming services

The alternative to watching tv via over the air broadcasting services is to use online streaming services. Several streaming services, including the applications listed below, have window applications available for download.

  • Netflix
  • Amazon Prime Video
  • Disney Plus

While other streaming services such as Apple TV don’t have a dedicated Windows application, you can still stream television from those servers via your web browser.

I’m also going to mention Plex again as the application also provides its streaming services. With Plex, you can also set up your own media server allowing you to stream media you own across to any supported device with access to your own computer network. You can find out more by reading our full Plex review.

Conclusion

I have published many articles on Plex. You can access all those articles via our Plex media server home page.
