Synced blocks in Notion how will you be using them?

Synced blocks have been added to the Notion application. As I read the release notes I wondered how I could use synchronised blocks with Notion?

In this article. I will be considering the question I asked above. But before I do that we need to look at how synchronised blocks work in Notion. I will share in the section below what I found during testing.

How to setup a synchronised blocks in Notion?

As Notion Synchronised blocks were added in Notion 2.11, which at the time of writing is the latest version I had to do some testing. I created a top-level page and a sub-page using the Notion application in Windows for testing. I then created a few synchronised blocks which included the following blocks.

  • Text
  • Bullet points
  • Numbered Lists
  • Tables

To create a synchronised block press the Notion shortcut key(/) then S and the synchronised block will appear in the block type menu. Once the block has been created you can enter your text or define another block within the synchronised block.

Once the synchronised block has been created select the synchronised block normally done by left-clicking on the section. This can be difficult if the block contains a table. Right-clicking appears to select the block as well as bringing up the right-button menu.

Once selected click on the copy and sync option for the block. Go to the page and section you want to copy the synced block. You can then paste the block in.

Any changes made in one block will also be applied to the other synchronised blocks.

How can I use Notion synchronised block?

Now you know how to use synchronised blocks let us consider my initial question on how can I use Notion synchronised blocks?

You could use synchronised blocks as an alternative to creating a linked database as it would deliver the same functionality. There was one key difference between using synchronised blocks and using a linked database. changing the data view on one list will change it on the other list in a synchronised block. While linked database allows you to create different views. For this reason. I will continue to use a linked database.

Where synchronised block could be useful is when you have a block of content that is displayed on various pages. Allowing you to edit that content once with the changes being made on all pages.

Conclusion

At the moment I can’t see myself using synced blocks in my Notion setup. Do you think you will be using synchronised blocks if so how?
