Spotify 2022 review

You can find my latest review, titled Spotify Review 2023, here.

I had initially planned to review Spotify in 2021 but held off due to the promise of HiFi quality streaming coming to Spotify. A feature that still hasn’t come. I can’t hold off writing the review any longer, especially as I have reviewed several Spotify competitors over the last few months.

I will also post my thoughts on the various music streaming services I have reviewed so far this year. So here is my review of Spotify in 2022.

The review was written based on my experiences of using the Spotify desktop app for Windows and the Spotify app on my Android phone and tablet. A lot of the music I listened to was played through an iFi Zen DAC.

Music quality

If you have signed up to Spotify premium sound quality maxes out at 320Kbs, which is below CD HiFi quality.

I gave Spotify the benefit of the doubt in my original review. Still, the music streaming marketplace has changed, as has the underlying technology that we can use to access music. Spotify is late to the party.

After saying all that, if you listen to your music a lot on the go with wireless Bluetooth earphones, the music quality is fine. It is an issue if you mainly listen to your music at home through a relatively good sound setup like myself.

Music discovery

Now, let us move on to Spotify’s strength in music discovery. Spotify provides many ways to discover new music.

My personal favourite is the weekly release radar updated every Friday, which showcases the artists you like and other new tracks you are likely to enjoy. On occasions, it will recommend different artists with the same name.

The infamous weekly discovery playlist featuring artists and tracks you might enjoy, again based on the music you enjoy.

A large number of curated playlists for the various musical genres for you to try and subscribe to

Like many other music streaming services, you have an artist and track playlist, but Spotify also offers a playlist radio. An excellent way to find new music based on what music you have in a specific library. I missed this when trying out the other streaming services.

User Interface

The Spotify user interface is a joy to use and is well designed. I also appreciate the consistency in design between the Windows and Android apps.

Summary

Spotify is let down because it hasn’t yet embraced HiFi quality music. If you are not bothered about music quality, I would recommend Spotify. If you do care about music quality, look elsewhere
