Review of the Sony X85J

This article reviews the Sony X85J 43 inch television, which I bought to replace my last tv, which I had owned for about five years. I purchased this TV in October, and this review is based on my experiences of using my TV.

Sony X85J specification

The Sony X85J supports HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision. The television also supports Dobly Atmos and DTS audio standards.

The Sony X85J is compatible with over the air Freeview channels in the UK or Freesat via the satellite tuner.

The television is running the Google TV operating system, an upgrade to Android TV. So all the major streaming services like Netflix are available. If you have a Plex server, you can install a Plex client, and I haven’t experienced any issues watching programmes from my Plex media server.

If I had written my review before Christmas, I would have moaned about the lack of the leading British streaming and catch up services such as BBC Iplayer and ITV Hub. Sony made available an update that I downloaded just before Christmas. With these catch-up services and Youview.

My experience of usng the Sony X85J Specification

The picture quality is excellent. The contrast between the blacks and light in HDR add real depth when watching HDR content.

What has impressed me is how well the Sony X85J upscaling is incredible. Some HD content looks like its UHD content, and even some standard resolution programming seems pretty good. Unsurprisingly some heavily compressed content doesn’t upscale so well, but I would argue that this isn’t the TV’s fault.

I have tried the internal speakers, and they are not too bad, though I would replace them with an external soundbar or speakers.

Summary

I think this is a fantastic Television and I would recommend it to any one. Picture quality is very good. On ocassions the black might not be as deep as it should be and on ocassions you can see blooming with bright colours on blacks, but not enough that I found it to be a problem. Sound is ok.
