How to use tags in Logseq to organise your notes

In this guide, we will explore what tags and how they work in Logseq.

What is a tag?

Tags are used in note-taking and Personal Knowledge management applications to group notes together by related category. Allowing the end user to build up a collection of related notes.

Why you should use tags

When I was learning at school and University, I would take notes on the subject I was learning, and they would be kept in a silo related to what I was learning. But this note-taking style doesn’t allow the cross-germination of ideas, and tags can help you overcome this. By enabling you t store files in one place. The tags allow you to maintain some structure in your notes.

Creating tags in Logseq

Tags are created in Logseq by putting the pound sign ‘#’ in front of the tag name. One of the key differences between Logseq and other note-taking applications, such as Obsidian, is that Logseq treats a tag the same way as a backlink. This means a page for the note will be created in Logseq for the tag.

This allows you to create a note for your tags should you want to provide some contextual information on what the tag is about.

However, remember that tags and backlinks can refer to the same note. I don’t think this is an issue. In fact, it could be beneficial. For example, could use backlinks when there is a direct link to that note while using tags in other cases.

Deleting tags in Logseq

It is possible to delete a tag note, but you would also need to delete all tags and backlinks referring to that note. In fact, I’m going to recommend that you don’t. The only exception to this rule is if you mistakenly created a tag and noticed it when you first made it.

A Personal Knowledge Management system is designed to evolve with you, and the notes contained within the Personal Knowledge Management system will reflect this.

Editing tags in Logseq

You can edit the tag name by changing the note name to which the tag links. These changes will be reflected on all tags or backlinks which link to that note.

Conclusion

This guide has explored what tags are and how to use them in Logseq.
