This guide will cover the process of exporting notes from Notion into Obsidian.
It is something that I have recently had to do as I moved my daily journal notes, which I had made in Notion, across to Obsidian which I currently use to keep a daily journal.
Exporting your notes from Notion
The following steps will take you through the process of exporting your notes and data from Notion.
- Open the page containing the notes in Notion
- Click on the ellipsis (the three dots)
- From the menu, select export PDF, HTML, Markdown
- From the menu, select Markdown & CSV
- Select everything from the database if you want to include notes contained within the database.
- Notion will export your data to the specified location
You want to select Markdown as that is a standard data format and is the native format used in Obsidian; the data table is saved as a CSV file, which can be opened by most Spreadsheet applications such as Excel and Google Sheets. You can learn more about exporting data from a Notion data table to a Spreadsheet in our guide.
As you would expect, the links within the exported notes will link to other notes in Notion. You can, of course, edit these links in Obsidian once the notes have been imported
Importing your Notion notes into Obsidian
I’m not recommending a single process for doing this, as it depends on the number of notes and how you plan to use them in Obsidian.
If it were just a few notes, I would probably move them into the Obsidian vault folder and then work my way through them and make any required changes to the notes, such as updating links and deciding where they go. I can do this as I use folders in my setup. You can learn more about Obsidian Vaults in our guide.
If you don’t usually use folders or are bringing many notes across, you might want to create a new folder in your fault and copy those files to that folder. I wish I had considered this when I moved my journal notes across.
Conclusion
You should now be able to export notes from Notion and import them into Obsidian.
I hope you found this guide informative, and I would like to recommend our guide on how to organise notes in Obsidian.
