Football Manager 2023 Review

Today I’m writing my review of Football Manager 2023, which I have been playing over the last couple of weeks. Is it any good? How does it compare with Football Manager 2022?

What is new in Football Manager 2023

A squad planner has been added to Football Manager 2023. The squad planer allows you to define how your team will look for the current, next, and future seasons.

You can add players to your team builder not just from your first team, reserves and youth teams but also from your shortlist, allowing you to start building a team for the next season and even the one after.

It is a helpful addition to the game, but it’s not a feature I use that often, and I think this will be true for most players, at least outside the transfer windows.

What has changed in Football Manager 2023

The match engine has been massively improved over Football Manager 2022. The players and ball movement being natural through defenders seem to have a problem reading high balls kicked over the team’s defensive line. Hopefully, this will get fixed in a future patch.

Scouting has also been improved with you and your head scout being able to define the type of players you want your scouting network to look for, and scouts will only report on players once the scouting has been completed. The game will also list any players that just missed the criteria you set should you need to compromise.

Last but not least, the interaction with agents has also been changed, with you being able to approach an agent before making an offer to the team to sound out interested the player is and to get an idea of what the demands are likely to be.

Is it worth buying Football Manager 2023

If you are a new player to the series or playing an earlier game than Football Manager 2022, I recommend buying the game as it builds on Football Manager 2022, which was the best game up to now. You can read my review of Football Manager 2022 here.

If you are currently playing Football Manager 2022, you might want to wait until the game gets discounted or wait until Football Manager 2024 is released.

Summary

A good game, but I’m slightly disappointed with the lack of improvements over last year’s Football Manager 2022.
