CTNET review of 2024 and predictions for 2025

As a technology writer, as 2024 comes to a close, I think it is time to review 2024 and try to predict what will likely happen in 2025. Let us start by reviewing 2024.

A review of 2024

It was relatively easy for me to predict that Artificial Intelligence, in the form of large language models, will dominate in 2024. Artificial intelligence has become a real marketing tool, with both Samsung and Apple trying to promote the Artificial capabilities of their mobile phones.

Personal AI Assistants

While I have played around with personal assistants driven by those large language models.

I have written several blog posts about my experiences using the Obsidian smart connections plug-in to marry my personal knowledge management system and a large language model via Open AI. This has, I think, given me an early indication of where the technology could go when it has access to my knowledge.

I have some concerns about the potential loss of cognitive abilities if we are not careful, and we need to be mindful of these potential pitfalls while using this technology.

I’ll include a link to related posts in the further reading section.

Google Notebook LM

One of the Large Language applications that was developed during 2024 was Google Notebook LM, and it came to my attention when I found out about its ability to generate a podcast conversation on the topic between two people using Artificial Intelligence.

As I mentioned in my initial blog post about Google Notebook LM’s ability to create podcasts, I think Google is on the verge of developing the first large language model killer application as a teaching assistant. I think I’ll need to explore this idea further in 2025.

As noted in the example I used in my initial blog post, the 50 note limit shouldn’t be a problem. You could have one notebook for each subject for which you want Google Notebook LM to act as a teaching Assistant.

Quantum Computing stability breakthrough

Earlier this month, Google announced a breakthrough in its research into Quantum computing. They had proven that increasing the number of qubits used in error checking had improved data reliability beyond the threshold required for reliable computing.

Quantum computers have the potential to do calculations beyond traditional computing.

My Technology Predictions for 2025

Development of Personal Artificial Assistants Driven by Large Language Model

I think we will see further development of Artificial Intelligence in note-taking and knowledge management.

Google will continue to develop Google Notebook LM, which will likely become an extremely useful learning assistant.

Mem 2.0 is due to be released in beta early next year. It will focus on using artificial intelligence to link related notes. I was very positive about Mem when I first used it, but I became disillusioned with the application as it evolved from a Personal Knowledge Management application to a more business-orientated note-taking application. It will be interesting to see how Mem 2 develops.

I think an AI married with your knowledge management system is the way to go for a Personal Artificial Intelligence assistant, which is why I continue to explore using Artificial Intelligence in my vault in a way that doesn’t weaken cognitive abilities but enhances them.

More vocal concerns about the development of Artificial General Intelligence

I think it is likely that more concerns will be raised surrounding the development of Artificial General Intelligence. Understandably so, as we would have developed technology that can figure stuff out to the same level as ourselves, we might not have all the limitations of an organic brain like our own.

I would be surprised if I didn’t look to write at least a couple of blog posts to explore this area further.

Spotify HiFi

I have included this as a matter of tradition. Could 2025 be the year Spotify get HiFi sound quality like most of its competition, such as Tidal and Apple Music?

I just can’t see why it won’t happen this year, though I thought the same when I made the predictions for 2024. So, don’t be surprised if I make the same prediction for 2026.

Conclusion

What were your highlights of 2024, and what do you think will be the main technology events of 2025?

Why don’t you sign up for our monthly newsletter, published on the first Friday of every month? It summarises all the content we had published during the month. I also summarise any interesting technology-related stories or news I have read since the last Newsletter.
