Civilization VI Barbarian outpost strategy

A guide in which I discuss the strategy I use to deal with Barbarians in Civilization VI. This guide will include my strategy of dealing with Barbarians with both the traditional and new rules. You can learn more about the new rules in our guide to Barbarian clans.

Civilization VI Barbarian outpost strategy traditional Barbarian rules

When I play a game of Civilization using the traditional barbarian rules, my strategy has two distinct parts.

  1. When an outpost appears close to one of my cities or close to an area that I’m looking to expand into I will look to destroy the Outpost as soon as I can in order to remove the threat.
  2. If the outpost is closer to another Civilization and in an area I’m not interested in I will leave them allow and will leave them for the other Civilization to deal with them.

If I doubt that it is safe to leave a Barbarian outpost alone, I will look to destroy it as soon as I can.

Diplomacy with Barbarians in Civilization 6

Civilization VI Barbarian outpost strategy new Barbarian rules

When playing a game of Civilization with the new Barbarian rules.

If the Barbarian outpost appears close to my Civilization. I will look to destroy the outpost as quickly as I can due to the potential threat the outpost poses to my Civilization.

Barbarian outposts that I don’t consider an immediate threat to my Civilization are often left alone. I will try to use them against another Civilization. This strategy has the potential risk as a Barbarian outpost left alone can build many units becoming a threat to your Civilization, especially in the early stages of a game. So if you are in doubt, look to destroy the outpost as soon as you can.
