What does screen resolution mean?

The simple answer is that the resolution defines the number of pixels within the display. Of course, in reality, the answer is more complicated than my original answer. Let’s start by defining what I mean by pixel.

What is a pixel?

The word pixel is an abbreviation of the words picture element. The screen you are reading this article will contain thousands of these pixels. It is the building block of the image that is displayed. The actual make-up of a pixel will depend on the underlying technology of the display. Whatever the technology, the pixel will display a colour made up from the primary colours Red, Green, and Blue (RGB).

What is a native resolution?

The native resolution defines the physical resolution of the screen determined by the number of pixels contained within the screen. The screen resolution is the number of pixels in a single row across and the number of pixels in a column going down the screen. Multiplying these two numbers will give you the number of pixels within the screen.

There are many possible screen resolutions available, but the most common screen resolutions at the time of writing are.

  • 4K resolution (UHD) is commonly a screen resolution of 3840 across and 2160 down.
  • 1440 (WQHD) a common resolution in computer displays is 2560 by 1440
  • 1080 (HD) the higher HD resolution of 1920 by 1080

What is upscaling

Content filmed or broadcast at a lower resolution than the screen native resolution must be upscaled to the display native resolution discussed above. The quality of the upscaling depends on the content native resolution and processing capability of the hardware and software of the device carrying out the upscaling.
